Located on the Kabul River in a valley strategically located between
mountain passes, it has existed for some 3,500 years. It became the
capital of the Mughal dynasty in the 16th century, and it remained
under Mughal rule until 1738, when it was captured by the Iranian
conqueror Nadir Shah.
Kabul has been the capital of Afghanistan since about 1776. The city
has been badly damaged during the various 1979–2001 wars, particularly
its western parts.

Kabul (Kâb'l, in Persian کابل) is the capital and largest city of
Afghanistan with a population variously estimated at 2 to 4 million.
When the Taliban fled Kabul in the face of the post-9/11 US bombing
campaign, they left a city wrecked by years of war. Half the city
consisted of rubble and no-one could remember the last time anything
new had been built. It was a city on life-support.
