Asunción is the capital of Paraguay. Asunción, as all of Paraguay, is
a very contrasting place. Some rank Asunción as the world's cheapest
capital. Few people would be able to explain why it is so charming
despite having few traditional tourist attractions like beaches,
mountains, or skyscrapers.

important city to the Spanish colonial administration. It was an
easier sail from Spain: across the Atlantic, up the Río de la Plata,
hop over to the Río Paraguay and use the growing port as a staging
area to the rest of the South American heartland.

remoteness from Spain, nationalist and separatist movements began
early in Paraguay: the Jesuits were expelled in 1767, and independence
from Spain was declared in Asunción at midnight on May 14/15, 1811.
